HFC Phase-Down Program - NOTICE TO HVAC&R COMPANIES

HFC Phase-Down Program - NOTICE TO HVAC&R COMPANIES

The phase down of high GWP F-Gas Refrigerants has been indicated by the government as beginning in 2019 and consultation on how the phase down should be managed has begun. The Climate Control Companies Association of New Zealand (CCCANZ) has begun working with those industries where Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC&R) is critical infrastructure, particularly large users of F-Gases, to support understanding of the impacts and what the phase down will mean.

Initial work has highlighted a lack of awareness within New Zealand industry of the implication of the change to a flammable refrigerant environment, shortages and withdrawal from market of currently relied on refrigerants and the unlicensed nature of the HVAC&R industry.

As part of the communication we have been raising awareness of both the CCCANZ and the Institute of Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers (IRHACE) accreditation and training programs and the credibility membership provides in this changing refrigerant landscape. This is a significant opportunity for CCCANZ and IRHACE members to have the work and commitments they have made under CCCANZ and IRHACE association guidelines to be recognised by current and potential customers looking to reduce risk during this period.
Over the coming months we will be working with members and end users to provide further information and support on the phase down and the implications for design, installation, service and maintenance and most importantly, health and safety.

In the meantime we would remind members of the courses available through Refrigerant License New Zealand (http://www.rlnz.org.nz/) in particular the online Flammable Refrigerant Safety Awareness course that should be a mandatory requirement for any credible HVAC&R organisation.
